Full details
Duke Raleigh Hospital, a campus of Duke University Hospital in Raleigh, North Carolina, is a 204-bed facility and the third largest of the four Duke Health hospitals. It provides a broad range of services, among them cancer, cardiovascular, neuroscience, advanced gastrointestinal, and wound healing care. The hospital is located at 3400 Wake Forest Rd, Raleigh, NC 27609.
The CRNA will provide general anesthesia to keep patients free of pain during surgical, obstetrical, and other procedures. Responsibilities include clearing the airway of secretions when needed, preparing drugs, supplies, and equipment, assembling and testing the gas machine, and confirming that suitable blood is on hand for emergencies. The provider reviews patient charts to anticipate how the anesthetic will affect each patient, watches vital signs throughout the case, and acts to keep the patient near normal physiologically.
Before a case, the CRNA explains the procedure to the patient and positions them on the operating table, then documents the patient's condition and the anesthetic given. After surgery the CRNA helps transfer the patient to recovery, checks on them, and treats any adverse effects of anesthesia. The role also includes supervising and teaching student nurse anesthetists, evaluating their clinical progress, and instructing residents, interns, and allied health students in anesthesiology methods. Equipment is broken down and the work area cleaned afterward, problems are reported, and records and periodic activity reports are kept.
Current hiring incentives include a $60,000 commitment bonus for experienced CRNAs, paid in $10,000 installments every six months over 36 months. A $15,000 annual stipend is offered to each 1.0 FTE CRNA working in a hospital setting for each fiscal year running July 1 through June 30, prorated and paid monthly according to FTE status. Full-time providers receive a $2,500 yearly continuing medical education allowance, prorated for lower FTE levels. A $8,000 relocation budget is available to CRNAs who move 50 miles or more to live near the Duke facility.
Eligibility requires graduation from an accredited MSN, DNP, or DNAP nurse anesthesia program, along with CRNA certification. New graduates may apply once they are eligible for certification by the AANA, and no experience beyond CRNA education and training is required. Candidates need a current RN license issued by or recognized by the North Carolina Board of Nursing, with approval to practice as a CRNA. Shift patterns differ by location and a wide range of options is available.
