The Milwaukee VA Medical Center is seeking two Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists to join its Anesthesia Department. Both openings qualify for the Education Debt Reduction Program, and highly qualified candidates may receive a recruitment incentive. The announcement stays open on a continuous basis through June 9, 2027, with applicants considered and referred as openings arise until they are filled.
In this role, the APN/CRNA delivers anesthesia to patients of every level of medical complexity in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Responsibilities span hands-on patient care, administrative work, teaching, and research. CRNAs render patients free from pain and emotional distress during surgical and invasive procedures, using general and regional anesthesia along with every level of sedation.
Core duties include working alongside a range of healthcare professionals to meet shared goals for patient care, safety, and wellbeing, and building confidence and satisfaction among patients and staff while meeting or exceeding compliance standards. The nurse anesthetist handles anesthesia services across five areas: pre-anesthesia assessment and preparation, induction, maintenance and emergence, post-anesthesia recovery, peri-anesthetic support, and emergency response. Anesthesia plans of care are built and carried out for local, regional, general, and monitored anesthesia both within and beyond the operating room. The position also ensures high-quality anesthesia delivery across the facility, serves as a resource for staff education, may precept and serve as adjunct clinical faculty for trainees, develops evidence-based practice, writes preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative orders and prescribes medications, models the ICARE values of integrity, commitment, advocacy, respect, and excellence, and takes on other assigned work.
The VA's total rewards package for nurses includes a competitive salary with regular raises and possible performance awards. Paid time off totals 50 days a year, made up of 26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, and 11 paid federal holidays. Retirement includes a traditional federal pension vesting after five years and a federal 401(k) with agency contributions of up to 5%. Insurance options cover health, vision, dental, term life, and long-term care, and many federal programs can continue into retirement. The position requires one full, unrestricted license from any U.S. state or territory. The schedule is weekdays, Monday through Friday, during the day shift listed for the role. Telework is not available, and the job is on-site rather than virtual. Relocation or recruitment incentives may be authorized, and Permanent Change of Station moves are not authorized. Former EDRP participants are not eligible for the incentive.
Minimum education is a master's or doctoral degree in nurse anesthesia from a program accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Education Programs at the time of completion. Candidates still finishing their education may be referred and tentatively selected but cannot be hired until the requirement is met. Nurses must hold and keep an active, unrestricted license as a CRNA or equivalent in a state, territory, or the District of Columbia, along with current certification from the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists or an equivalent certification the COA recognizes. Entry at the Nurse II level requires no experience, while the Nurse III level calls for one year of specialized CRNA experience. Preferred qualifications include prior CRNA work in a medical center, tertiary care, or Level 1A facility, broad experience across general, regional, monitored, and sedation care for varied specialties, independent management of complex cases, and an interest in veterans' care.
Additional conditions include U.S. citizenship unless no qualified citizen can be recruited, a urinalysis drug screen for testing-designated roles, proficiency in English for direct patient care, Selective Service registration for men born after December 31, 1959, a background investigation, a pre-employment physical, and required seasonal influenza vaccination. Applicants must provide acceptable identification, which for employment must be REAL ID compliant. A probationary period may apply. The position sits in the Excepted Service without competitive status, and VA encourages applications from people with disabilities.
