Full details

The position is a full-time, non-exempt hourly role for a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist within the Department of Anesthesiology at UPMC Altoona, practicing under the University of Pittsburgh Physicians. The hospital has 13 operating rooms plus off-site anesthesia locations, including critical care units, the emergency department, GI and endoscopy suites, obstetrics, electrophysiology, bronchoscopy, cardiac catheterization labs, interventional radiology, neurointerventional labs, MRI and CT, and a six-room Surgery Center. Shifts are 8 or 10 hours long. The expanding structural heart program includes echocardiographic support for PFO closures, Watchman procedures, and TAVR cases.

Duties include providing anesthetic care for all patients in cooperation with a supervising physician and in line with Department of Anesthesiology standards and hospital policy. The CRNA administers anesthesia and related care across the pre-anesthetic, induction, maintenance, emergence, recovery, and peri-anesthesia phases, monitors patient responses to sedatives and anesthetic agents, and alerts the anesthesiologist to any adverse condition that could threaten safety. The role carries accountability for controlled substances under department, hospital, state, and federal rules. The CRNA also reviews informed consent documentation, confirms the correct surgical site with the operating room team and surgeon, helps teach and evaluate newly hired CRNAs, nurse anesthesia residents, and student registered nurse anesthetists, and takes part in quality improvement through documentation, incident reporting, evaluation, and education.

Compensation and incentives described include a competitive salary with recently increased ranges, substantial sign-on bonuses, and a generous relocation assistance program. A career ladder lets CRNAs choose areas of interest and earn financial rewards along a chosen pathway, while a tier program raises pay at credentialed sites alongside performance-based annual increases. Site movement incentives recognize flexibility. Scheduling options include flexible shifts and PTO advancement. Benefits include generous paid time off and paid parental leave. The employer also points to ongoing educational resources and a multidisciplinary team of surgeons, anesthesiologists, and other clinicians.

Altoona is presented as a community with a long history, a lower cost of living, good schools, and access to outdoor recreation and cultural attractions, combining small-town character with modern amenities.
