Responsibilities include independently managing a panel of patients with acute and chronic conditions, with a focus on health promotion and disease prevention grounded in evidence-based practice. The position involves designing and carrying out individualized plans for population health and disease management, and providing leadership while working alongside the Primary Care Team and other interdisciplinary colleagues. Duties also cover ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, prescribing drug and non-drug treatments, making specialty referrals, educating patients and their families, and revising care plans as needed. The role calls for living the ICARE values of integrity, commitment, advocacy, respect, and excellence.
The VA total rewards package includes a competitive salary with regular raises and possible performance awards. Employees receive 50 days of paid time off each year, made up of 26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, and 11 paid federal holidays. Retirement includes a traditional federal pension vesting after 5 years and a federal 401K with VA contributions of up to 5%. Insurance options include federal health, vision, dental, term life, and long-term care coverage, and many of these programs can be kept into retirement.

Those still completing their degree may be referred and tentatively selected but cannot be hired until the requirement is met. Graduates of foreign programs must have their degree validated by an agency-recognized equivalency service, and candidates with equivalent degrees who hold current, full, unrestricted registration and certification may also qualify.
An active, unrestricted APN license in a U.S. state, territory, or the District of Columbia is mandatory, along with full, current board certification in a clinical specialty from ANCC, AANPCB, or another nationally recognized certifying body.
