Full details

The role centers on selecting and giving intravenous, spinal, and other anesthetics before and during surgical or medical procedures, working as part of the anesthesia care team under the organization's policies. The CRNA watches patient responses and vital signs throughout anesthesia and into recovery, acting promptly when needed, then reports on the patient's condition afterward and keeps accurate anesthesia records.

Before a case, the CRNA reviews or performs anesthetic evaluations for surgical, obstetric, and other procedures in a hospital setting, consulting with anesthesiologists and surgeons. This includes reviewing charts, such as consent forms, pre-operative medications, lab results, and any relevant variations like hearing aids, dentures, contact lenses, or prostheses. The CRNA assesses possible airway difficulties, documents pre-anesthesia evaluations thoroughly, and explains tests, procedures, and major anesthetic risks to patients and families.

The CRNA builds each assigned patient's care plan, reviews it with the supervising physician, and carries it out by starting IV fluids, giving the chosen anesthetic, and managing the patient according to departmental policy. Drug choice takes into account patient safety, the surgery, possible complications, and the patient's history. The CRNA also hands off to post-anesthesia care unit staff in a safety-focused exchange and informs the anesthesiologist or surgeon of any significant changes, including neonatal resuscitation when required.

Additional duties include mixing medications to specified concentrations, such as thiopental, succinylcholine, and vasoactive agents, and recording procedures and patient status immediately before anesthesia is given. The CRNA may perform procedures outside the operating room, such as intubation and arterial line placement, only within established competencies and a physician's order, and documents those procedures in progress notes.
