Full details

The certified registered nurse anesthetist is a licensed registered nurse with advanced training in delivering anesthesia, administering and adjusting anesthetic doses for patients of every age, from newborns to older adults, during surgery and other procedures. This opening is limited to select locations because of its particular workplace conditions.

Core responsibilities include reviewing the physician's pre-anesthetic evaluation, laboratory results, and the patient's psychosocial and physical history, then examining the patient and discussing the planned procedure with them. The nurse confirms safety checks before induction, including the anesthesia machine, suction, airway equipment, and monitor and electrosurgical electrode placement. Induction, maintenance, intubation, extubation, and regional anesthesia are carried out under the direction of the assigned staff anesthesiologist or established department practice, with medication selection following departmental guidelines.

Throughout each case, the nurse uses all available noninvasive monitoring, records vital signs at set intervals, manages fluid, blood, and electrolyte replacement, and documents significant events, including tourniquet details and drugs injected at the surgical site. Emergencies are managed according to department policy, and any adverse drug reaction prompts prompt corrective action and consultation with the senior staff anesthesiologist. The nurse hands off to recovery staff with a detailed report and follows patients after anesthesia as needed to identify any complications.

Post-anesthetic visits are charted on a progress note that records the visit time, patient status, and the signature of the clinician who performed the visit. Ongoing expectations include completing 40 continuing education units every two years, keeping certification and registration current, understanding current resuscitation concepts, and taking part in a collaborative anesthesia team. The position requires flexibility with variable hours and sharing on-call duties with a prompt response when called.

Benefits include immediate eligibility for health and welfare plans, a 401(k) with a dollar-for-dollar match up to 5%, tuition reimbursement, and paid time off accruing from the first day. Benefits may differ depending on position type and level. The listed minimums are a bachelor's degree and less than one year of experience, along with CRNA credentials, ACLS certification within 30 days of hire or transfer, and BLS certification within the same window.
