Full details
The schedule is 10.5-hour days, 07:00 to 17:30. This VA opening qualifies for the Education Debt Reduction Program, a student loan payment reimbursement benefit. Applicants must meet the program's eligibility rules under VHA policy and file the EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, the award amount (up to $200,000), and the eligibility period (one to five years) are set by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after it reviews the application. Former participants cannot apply.
The certified registered nurse anesthetist delivers a full range of anesthesia services in inpatient and outpatient settings for patients of every level of complexity, with an emphasis on quality, timeliness, and the VA mission. The nurse practices under Arizona law, Board of Nursing rules, and VHA directives, and must hold an unrestricted RN license, AANA certification, and current BLS and ACLS credentials. Scope of practice is defined locally within the individual's state license and the VA Medical Center bylaws. Responsibilities span direct patient care, administration, education, and research.
Core duties include pre-anesthesia evaluation, induction, maintenance and emergence, post-anesthesia care, peri-anesthetic support, and emergency response, both in and outside the operating room. The nurse selects and places non-invasive and invasive monitoring, builds individualized anesthesia plans covering local, regional, general, and monitored care, and writes pre-, intra-, and postoperative orders and medications within privileges. The role also involves collaborating with interdisciplinary teams, improving quality and outcomes, adopting evidence-based practice, and teaching staff and trainees as a preceptor or adjunct clinical faculty member.
Compensation includes a competitive salary with regular raises and potential performance awards. Paid time off totals 50 days a year: 26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, and 11 federal holidays. Retirement includes a traditional federal pension with five-year vesting and a federal 401(k) with agency contributions of up to 5%. Federal health, vision, dental, term life, and long-term care insurance are offered, and many federal plans can be kept into retirement.
The position requires a master's or doctoral degree in nurse anesthesia from a COA-accredited program at completion, a full and unrestricted state license, and NBCRNA certification or an equivalent recognized credential. Nurse II is the entry level and requires no prior experience, while Nurse III requires one year of specialized APN experience at the Nurse II level. The role is not virtual, telework is unavailable, and relocation incentives and PCS are not authorized. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, except in limited cases allowed by VA policy, and must meet English proficiency, background, drug screening, pre-employment physical, and influenza vaccination requirements.
The position is in the Excepted Service, does not confer competitive status, and may carry a probationary period.
