Full details

Working under an Attending Anesthesiologist, the nurse anesthetist provides care to patients before, during and after anesthesia, including administering anesthesia and monitoring patients throughout. The role calls for sound judgment and experience to plan and reach care goals, along with a fair amount of independent thinking and flexibility. Nurse anesthetists take turns managing the daily scheduling of case coverage.

Candidates need at least one year of experience in an acute care nursing setting and must hold current New York State nursing licenses. Certification by the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists is required; those who are newly graduated have 12 months to meet certification standards, and recertification takes place every two years under the Council's requirements. Applicants should be graduates of an accredited nurse anesthesia program and degree program, with completed clinical rotations and a minimum of one to two years of work experience in anesthesiology acceptable to the Chairman or Director of Anesthesiology.

Basic skills in Microsoft Word, internet use and research tools are expected, as are strong written and verbal communication abilities.
