Full details

This is a full-time, ongoing CRNA position at Provident Hospital of Cook County, part of Cook County Health, with a day shift running from 6:30 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. The role is covered by the collective bargaining agreement with SEIU Local 73, and the posted hourly range is $103.818 to $120.355, set according to the years of experience documented at the time of application.

Working alongside an anesthesiologist, the nurse anesthetist gives anesthetic agents and adjuvants to patients undergoing a broad range of surgical and obstetrical procedures across the system's facilities, including John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital and Provident Hospital. Responsibilities include pre-operative evaluation of each patient's readiness, proposing a primary anesthetic plan with an alternative, reviewing the risks and benefits of both with the patient or guardian and family, and obtaining informed consent. Post-operative visits check recovery from anesthesia.

During procedures, the nurse anesthetist manages the airway, performs induction, intubation and maintenance, supports ventilation manually or by mechanical ventilator, and monitors the patient's physiologic status using electrocardiography, pulse oximetry, capnography, blood gas and electrolyte testing, and invasive monitoring where needed. The role also covers administering oxygen, gases, intravenous anesthetics, analgesics, regional blocks, fluids, and blood products, responding to abnormal reactions by taking corrective action or calling in an anesthesiologist, and keeping an accurate record of drugs and fluids.

The position includes observing patients until they regain control of vital functions, participating in departmental quality assurance work, morbidity and mortality reporting, and conferences, and attending the weekly Morbidity & Mortality Conference, Anesthesiology Grand Rounds, and staff meetings. The nurse anesthetist also teaches and supervises student nurse anesthetists from Rush University's program, stays current on anesthesia practice, and completes required hospital safety training.

Minimum requirements include an active Illinois registered professional nurse license, or the ability to obtain one two weeks before starting, and an Illinois advanced practice nurse license. Candidates need a master's degree from an accredited nurse anesthesia program, or be eligible to finish one before starting, and must hold or obtain the Illinois advanced practice license and CRNA certification no later than the start date. Current CPR, ACLS and PALS certifications are also required, or must be obtained within two weeks of starting.

Preferred experience includes hands-on work with a full range of anesthetic agents, adjuvants, machines, instruments and monitoring equipment, and delivering every type of anesthesia, including monitored anesthesia care, regional and general techniques. The role calls for teamwork under pressure, analytical judgment, and the ability to lead, teach and work any shift, along with the physical capacity to stand for long periods and lift or push heavy loads.

Hiring is contingent on satisfactory references, health and criminal background checks, appropriate licensure, and passing a physical and pre-employment drug screen. Veterans who meet the minimum qualifications may receive preference under county rules if they supply the required discharge documentation at filing and at interview.
