Full details

The certified registered nurse anesthetist will deliver anesthesia to pediatric patients of all kinds who are having surgical or other procedures that require anesthesia, working as part of a care team alongside an anesthesiologist. Care follows recognized standards, the Department of Anesthesiology's standards, and hospital policy, and extends from the preoperative period through transfer after the procedure. The role calls for constant, attentive monitoring of each patient's condition and response to medication, with prompt adjustments as needed and immediate notice to the supervising anesthesiologist about critical events or any change that threatens a patient's safety.

Core responsibilities include completing pre-anesthetic evaluations, creating anesthetic plans, placing intravenous and ultrasound-guided arterial or intravenous catheters, managing induction, maintenance and emergence, and handing off patients with a full report to the receiving team. The nurse also gives fluids, blood and blood products as indicated, keeps accurate anesthesia records, checks equipment and supplies before each case, handles controlled substances under policy and regulation, takes part in surgical pauses, and teaches student nurse anesthetists, residents, medics and nurses. In a life-threatening emergency, the nurse provides care if no anesthesiologist is present. Assignments are mainly pediatric, with occasional adult cases, and the role may include nights, weekends, holidays and on-call duty as department needs require.

Minimum qualifications include graduation from an accredited nurse anesthesia program, a current registered nurse license and a current advanced practice license in West Virginia, current certification from the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists, and active membership in the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists. Applicants should have at least one year of work as a CRNA and a minimum of 15 pediatric anesthesia cases in patients under six years old. Ongoing requirements include 15 Class A continuing education credits with a pediatric focus every two years.

Skills expected include computer proficiency for charting and scheduling, strong communication with patients, families and colleagues, airway management with departmental equipment, and familiarity with devices such as ultrasound units, fluid warmers and hemodynamic monitors. The position is based at a medical center in Morgantown, West Virginia, and is offered by University Health Associates as an exempt role within its anesthesiology department.
