Full details

This as-needed position calls for a CRNA to deliver anesthetic care to patients across all types of procedures, working alongside the supervising or medically directing physician and following hospital policies. The anesthetist keeps patients insensitive to pain during surgery or procedures, watches closely for reactions to sedatives, analgesics and anesthetic agents, and alerts the surgeon or anesthesiologist to any adverse change that could endanger a patient.

Candidates need a current registered nursing license in West Virginia or in whichever state the services will be performed, along with board certification or recertification from the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists.

Core responsibilities include keeping patients safe at all times, managing airways skillfully with a range of adjuncts such as bullard scopes, fiberoptic scopes and ILMAs, and practicing within delineated clinical privileges. The CRNA joins in pre-anesthetic evaluation, chooses agents and techniques, places intravenous and invasive monitoring catheters, performs intubation and extubation, and draws arterial blood for gas analysis. Duties also cover managing induction, maintenance and emergence for general, regional and monitored anesthesia cases, handling abnormal responses, providing resuscitation, and caring for patients after surgery.

The role further involves fluid and blood product administration guided by the patient's history and procedure, accurate anesthesia record documentation, and safety and performance checks on equipment before care begins. The CRNA verifies consent and surgical site during briefings and the surgical pause, communicates with the wider peri-operative team, and in a life-threatening emergency provides anesthesia when no anesthesiologist is present. Responsibilities also include helping teach and evaluate newly hired CRNAs, GRNAs and SRNAs, and being accountable for controlled substances under hospital, state and federal rules.

Physically, the work requires close visual detail, calm performance under high stress, reliability, and adaptability to varied conditions. Staff may be exposed to infectious patients and hazardous substances, must follow strict safety protocols, and may face back strain when moving patients. Call, night, weekend and holiday coverage may be required. The posting lists the employer as University Health Associates, with the anesthesiology unit located at a medical center in Morgantown, West Virginia.
