This Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Anesthetist) opening is with Evans Army Community Hospital and is posted as a direct hire solicitation. Candidates new to federal service may be considered for salary negotiation, and student loan repayment may be approved. Prior non-federal work may count toward leave accrual, and a recruitment or relocation incentive may be granted to highly qualified applicants.
The nurse anesthetist provides anesthesia for surgical cases ranging from straightforward to highly complicated. Responsibilities include assessing each patient's physical and mental condition before anesthesia, consulting the anesthesiologist when needed to determine the appropriate plan, and watching patients throughout surgery to keep anesthesia at the correct depth while avoiding overdose. The role also involves advising a broad group of health care colleagues on current developments in nurse anesthesia and nursing practice.
Only United States citizens may apply. Qualifying education requires a graduate or higher degree from a nurse anesthesia program accredited by a recognized body such as the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, and applicants must supply transcripts. Foreign-educated applicants need certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools, and foreign coursework must be evaluated as equivalent to an accredited U.S. program.
Applicants must hold a current, active, full, unrestricted registration as a professional nurse in a U.S. state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory, having passed the National Council Licensure Examination, and must also hold an unrestricted anesthesia-specialty nursing license or registration. The GS-12 level requires at least one full year of professional nursing experience that includes giving anesthetics by inhalation, regional, neuraxial, intravenous, local, or topical routes, monitoring anesthetized patients, and educating staff or patients. Current federal employees in the 0610 occupational series who have been continuously employed since September 27, 2017 or earlier may qualify under a separate exemption.
Other conditions include a one-year trial or probationary period, required direct deposit of pay, and selection subject to Department of Defense referral rules for displaced employees. Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must complete Selective Service registration certification. Permanent change of station costs are not authorized. The position may be designated as Emergency Essential, Key, or Mission Essential, and several positions may be filled from the announcement. Salary includes applicable locality pay or a Local Market Supplement.
