Full details
The position provides anesthetic care to patients undergoing all types of procedures, working alongside the supervising or medically directing physician and following hospital policies. The CRNA administers anesthesia so that patients feel no pain during surgery or procedures, and continuously watches each patient's physical response to sedatives, analgesics, and anesthetic agents, alerting the surgeon or anesthesiologist to any adverse change that could threaten safety.
Candidates need a current registered nurse license in West Virginia or in whatever state the services will be delivered, along with certification or recertification from the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists.
Core responsibilities include keeping patients safe at all times, managing airways skillfully with a range of adjuncts such as the Bullard scope, fiberoptic scope, and ILMA, and practicing within delineated clinical privileges. The CRNA joins in pre-anesthetic evaluations, chooses agents and techniques, places intravenous and invasive monitoring catheters, performs intubation and extubation, and draws arterial blood for gas analysis. The role also covers managing induction, maintenance, and emergence for general, regional, and monitored cases, responding to abnormal reactions, giving fluids and blood products under the stated protocols, and caring for patients after surgery.
Additional duties involve verifying equipment and supplies before care begins, reviewing consent documents and confirming the surgical site during team briefings and the surgical pause, documenting in the anesthesia record, handling controlled substances under policy and state and federal rules, and teaching or evaluating newly hired CRNAs, student nurse anesthetists, and graduate nurse anesthetists. In a life-threatening emergency, the CRNA provides anesthesia care when no anesthesiologist is present.
The work involves close detailed vision, calm performance under high stress, and adaptability to varied conditions. The setting may expose staff to infectious agents and hazardous substances, requires strict safety protocols, and can involve lifting patients. The position may require on-call duty, night shifts, weekends, or holidays. The posting lists a standard 40-hour weekly schedule at the Parkersburg, West Virginia location, within the SMG Anesthesia group.
