Full details
The position is a full-time, regular role at Geisinger Community Medical Center in a rotating shift, with a scheduled 40 hours per week, and it is classified as exempt. The CRNA delivers anesthesia in the operating room for surgical, diagnostic, and therapeutic cases while working under the general oversight of an anesthesiologist. Responsibilities extend before and after surgery, covering pre-anesthesia evaluation and post-operative follow-up, and the nurse anesthetist acts as the patient's advocate, counselor, and go-between for patients, relatives, and surgeons.
Core clinical work includes administering anesthesia, choosing medications for both anesthesia and emergency use, inducing and sustaining anesthetic states, handling resuscitation events, and keeping the airway secure. The CRNA watches each patient closely, changes medication dosing as conditions shift, manages complications, and reads hemodynamic waveforms along with equipment readings. Before a case, the CRNA reviews the chart thoroughly, prepares the room with the required equipment, monitors, and drugs, and runs device checks. Coordination with surgeons, other anesthesia providers, the charge CRNA, nurses, and support staff helps ensure safe positioning, troubleshooting, and an understanding of the planned procedure.
The practitioner may also cover anesthesia needs in assigned service areas, record care promptly and thoroughly in the electronic medical record, and move patients safely while monitoring the airway and handing off to the receiving team. Teaching is part of the role: the CRNA serves as an expert resource, mentor, and preceptor for colleagues, nurses, residents, students, and ancillary personnel. Travel may be required, and the work takes place in a clinical setting.
Required credentials are a master's degree in nursing, basic life support certification, a CRNA license, and a Pennsylvania registered nurse license. The listed skill areas include care management, clinical policy adherence, health information documentation, patient assessment and care, patient safety, and patient rights.
