Full details
This open continuous announcement stays posted through September 30, 2026, with an initial referral cut-off of August 10, 2026, and later eligible applications are referred periodically or as vacancies arise. The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist provides advanced clinical practice, consultation, and management across direct patient care, administration, education, and research. Specific duties are set by the local clinical privileges and scope of practice, bounded by the individual's state license and the facility's bylaws. Where the scope allows, the CRNA may write preoperative and postoperative anesthesia orders and, with a DEA registration, prescribe controlled substances independently in the perioperative period.
Responsibilities include working alongside a range of clinicians toward shared goals of patient safety and welfare, building confidence and satisfaction among patients and staff, and meeting or surpassing compliance expectations. The CRNA delivers anesthesia across five areas: pre-anesthesia evaluation and preparation, induction and maintenance along with emergence, recovery care, peri-anesthetic and clinical support work, and emergency response. Plans are developed for local, regional, general, and monitored anesthesia, both in the operating suite and at other sites. The role also involves serving as a teaching resource, acting as preceptor and adjunct faculty for trainees, contributing to evidence-based practice development, and upholding the ICARE values of integrity, commitment, advocacy, respect, and excellence, along with other assigned duties.
The position is a full-time federal post with a standard schedule of four days within Monday through Friday, 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., though the tour may be arranged as 8, 10, 12, 16, or 24 hour shifts. On-call, holiday, and weekend coverage may be required. Compressed or flexible schedules are available, while telework, virtual work, relocation incentives, and permanent change of station are not offered. The benefits package lists competitive pay with regular raises and possible performance awards, 50 paid days off each year (26 annual leave, 13 sick leave, and 11 federal holidays), a traditional pension with a federal 401K matched up to 5 percent, and federal health, vision, dental, life, and long-term care insurance.
Qualifying candidates need a master's or doctoral degree from a nurse anesthesia program accredited by COA at completion, and may be tentatively selected while finishing that degree. An active, unrestricted state license and current NBCRNA certification or an equivalent COA-recognized credential are conditions of employment. Entry is at the Nurse II level with no experience required, and a temporary appointment of up to one year and a day is possible for candidates who lack licensure or certification. Advancement to the Nurse III level requires one year of specialized CRNA experience and involves complex cases, varied anesthetizing locations, mentoring students and residents, quality auditing, and committee or interdisciplinary service.
Physical demands include visual acuity, keen hearing, clear speech, manual dexterity, and long periods of standing, walking, and lifting or transferring patients, with mechanical lifts available. Exposure to infectious patients, protective clothing in isolation cases, and occasional combative patients may occur. Requirements include U.S. citizenship, except in limited cases allowed by VA policy, English proficiency, drug screening, a background check, a pre-employment physical, annual employee health compliance, the seasonal influenza vaccine, and COVID-19 vaccination. Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered with Selective Service. The position sits in the Excepted Service and does not confer competitive status, and the agency encourages applications from people with disabilities.
