Full details

This per diem role at Geisinger Medical Center in Pennsylvania places a CRNA in the operating room to deliver anesthesia for surgical, diagnostic and therapeutic cases, working beneath an anesthesiologist's oversight. The position also covers preoperative assessment and postoperative follow-up, and the CRNA acts as an advocate for patients and families while serving as a point of contact between them and physicians.

Core responsibilities include administering anesthesia, choosing medications for both anesthesia and emergency care, and starting and sustaining anesthetic depth. The CRNA watches each patient closely, changes medications as conditions require, treats complications of anesthesia, and keeps the surgeon, other anesthesia providers and the charge CRNA informed of patient status. Hemodynamic tracings and equipment readings must be interpreted, and corrective action taken to maintain stability before, during and after anesthesia.

Before a case, the CRNA reviews the chart and completes a thorough patient evaluation, reassures the patient, and prepares the room with the required equipment, monitors and drugs. Equipment checks are performed, and the CRNA works with ancillary, nursing and physician colleagues on positioning, troubleshooting and procedure review. The role includes responding to emergency codes, managing the airway, supporting assigned areas, and documenting care accurately in the electronic medical record. Patients are transported safely, and handoff is given to the receiving team.

The CRNA also functions as an anesthesia expert and mentor, precepting and teaching peers, staff, residents, students and nurses. Required credentials are a master's degree in nursing, national certification and licensure as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, a Pennsylvania registered nurse license, and Basic Life Support certification.
