Full details

Working under the medical direction of an anesthesiologist, the CRNA provides general and regional anesthesia for surgical, obstetrical and other procedures requiring anesthesia care. Patients span neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric age groups, and care follows hospital and departmental standards. Typical clinical work covers airway management, fluid and hemodynamic balance, monitoring, emergency airway and resuscitation response, and care of ventilated patients.

The role involves pre-operative assessment through patient interview, examination and chart review, then choosing an anesthetic plan with the anesthesiologist. The CRNA tracks patient response to premedication, coordinates concerns with the surgeon and anesthesiologist, and keeps the anesthesia equipment checked and ready between cases.

Additional duties include preparing medications, administering anesthesia within granted clinical privileges, precepting student nurse anesthetists, and keeping accurate controlled substance records and equipment upkeep under departmental policy. The position requires adherence to organizational, accreditation and state regulatory standards, and courteous professional interaction with patients, staff and the public. Other duties within scope of licensure may be assigned.
