Full details

Working under the medical supervision of an anesthesiologist, the CRNA provides general and regional anesthesia for surgical, obstetrical and other procedures requiring anesthesia. Patients served span every age group, from neonates and children through adolescents, adults and older adults, and care follows hospital and departmental standards.

Responsibilities include airway management, fluid and homeostasis maintenance, intraoperative monitoring, and responding to airway emergencies and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, as well as managing patients on ventilators. The nurse anesthetist evaluates patients before surgery by interviewing and examining them and reviewing their charts, then chooses an anesthetic together with the anesthesiologist. Each anesthetic is given within the provider's delineated clinical privileges and any conditions attached to them.

After surgery, the CRNA assesses each patient within 24 hours and acts to keep the patient stable. Other duties include checking and maintaining equipment daily and between cases, preparing medications, keeping an accurate count of controlled substances, and precepting student nurse anesthetists. The role requires following organizational rules and regulatory standards, including Joint Commission and California Title 22 requirements, and maintaining courteous working relationships with patients, staff and the public.
