Responsibilities include pre-anesthetic evaluation and informed consent, developing anesthetic plans, managing airway, fluids, and invasive monitoring, administering monitored anesthesia care as well as regional and general anesthesia, and managing emergence and post-operative recovery. The CRNA also records anesthesia events and medications in detail, completes post-anesthetic visits, and advises the supervising anesthesiologist about adverse reactions that require non-delegated medical decisions. Additional duties include quality improvement activities, narcotics control, training of other staff, committee work, and adherence to local anesthesia policies.
Candidates must hold a master's degree in nursing, have graduated from a COA-accredited nurse anesthesia program, and hold RNA certification from AANA or NBCRNA. Current BLS and ACLS certification from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross is required, along with a full, unrestricted RN anesthetist license in a U.S. state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, or the U.S. Virgin Islands, and a DEA registration. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, communicate fluently in English, and be able to stand or sit for long periods.
Experience requirements include at least 24 months of documented independent clinical practice within the last 36 months, with the competency needed for regular independent privileges. The role also calls for at least 12 months of labor epidural experience within the last 24 months, and experience delivering and monitoring the full range of obstetric anesthesia techniques, including general endotracheal, subarachnoid, combined, block, and epidural.
Scheduling rotates across day, evening, night, and weekend shifts of eight, ten, twelve, sixteen, or 24 hours, averaging 40 hours weekly. Core duty hours are Monday through Friday, 0700 to 1500, with occasional after-hours, weekend, or overnight coverage. The posting lists 100 overage hours. The setting is fast-paced and demanding, requiring flexibility, reprioritization on short notice, strong time management, teamwork, and the ability to meet firm deadlines.
