Full details
This PRN Nurse Anesthetist II role at Houston Methodist is held under the direction of the attending anesthesiologist and the department chair. The certified nurse anesthetist provides pre-anesthesia, intraoperative and post-anesthesia care within a clinical, research and academic setting, operating under the Texas nurse practice act and Houston Methodist standards of care.
The position also contributes to departmental research and takes an active part in the teaching mission of the Department of Anesthesiology. Duties include instructing nurse anesthesia students, serving as a resource for students and other clinicians, and helping to build curricula and staff education programs.
Core clinical work covers completing pre-anesthesia evaluations, developing anesthetic plans, administering anesthesia through induction, maintenance and emergence, and managing airway needs both inside and outside the surgical suite. The role also includes placing epidural catheters, arterial lines, central venous lines and pulmonary artery catheters, and responding to emergencies with advanced airway care or cardiac life support.
Candidates need a bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited nursing school and completion of a nurse anesthesia program, along with four years of anesthesia experience. Required credentials include a Texas RN license, a Texas APRN-CRNA license, NBCRNA certification, BLS and ACLS, with a permanent Texas license due within 60 days for those establishing Texas residency. Strong familiarity with cardiac, vascular and thoracic anesthesia and with anesthetic and vasoactive pharmacology is expected.
The position is non-exempt, part-time or as-needed, and falls under the day work shift. Employees may be called in for on-call coverage, and the role may involve travel within the Houston metropolitan area but not beyond it. Business professional attire is required rather than scrubs.
The role sits within Houston Methodist Specialty Physician Group, which supports physicians in keeping clinical autonomy while building practices in an academic medical environment.
