Full details
UChicago Medicine is seeking a full-time Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist to join its Anesthesiology Department on a swing shift with call coverage. A sign-on bonus and relocation package are available. The position is described as a full-time role with a 1.0 FTE and a rotating shift, and it is non-union.
The CRNA would provide perioperative care, beginning with preoperative assessment and sedation, then administering and managing anesthesia, ending the anesthetic, and handling postoperative management. Core duties include retrieving anesthesia drugs from the satellite pharmacy, preparing drugs and delivery equipment, and building an anesthesia plan after chart review, a preoperative patient interview, and discussion with the surgeon and attending anesthesiologist. The role also calls for expert airway management, including mask ventilation, laryngeal mask placement, and endotracheal intubation, along with skill in placing and interpreting monitoring such as ECGs, arterial and central lines, pulmonary artery catheters, transesophageal echocardiography, and peripheral nerve stimulators.
The nurse anesthetist would document perioperative events in the chart and anesthesia record, move patients after surgery to a suitable location based on the technique used and their condition, and hand off their status to the appropriate clinician. Anesthesia induction, maintenance, and emergence are managed together with the attending anesthesiologist. Other assigned duties may also be required.
The setting is a large academic medical center described as one of the country's leading institutions, with exposure to every surgical and procedural specialty and Level One trauma care. Candidates must hold current Illinois RN and APN licensure and a BSN, along with BLS and ACLS certification. They must have graduated from an AANA-approved nurse anesthesia program with a master's degree or higher from a COA-accredited program, pass the National Certification Examination after graduation, and be certified or eligible for certification by both the AANA and NBCRNA. Applicants also need at least one year of full-time critical care experience as a registered nurse, or the part-time equivalent, and must keep certification current through continuing education.
