Full details

Working under the medical direction of an anesthesiologist, the CRNA provides general and regional anesthesia for surgical, obstetrical, and other procedures requiring anesthesia. Patients served span every age group, from neonates and children through adolescents, adults, and older adults, with care delivered according to hospital and departmental standards.

Responsibilities include airway management, fluid and homeostasis maintenance, patient monitoring, and responding to airway emergencies and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, as well as managing ventilator-dependent patients. The CRNA evaluates patients before surgery through interviews, examinations, and chart review, and selects the anesthetic plan with the anesthesiologist. Anesthesia is given within the provider's delineated clinical privileges, and the CRNA monitors patients during surgery, assesses them afterward within 24 hours, and takes action to keep them stable.

Additional duties include checking and maintaining equipment daily and between cases, preparing medications, keeping an accurate count of controlled substances, communicating with surgeons and anesthesiologists about patient concerns, and precepting student nurse anesthetists. The role requires following organizational policies and applicable state, federal, and local law, including accreditation and Title 22 requirements, and maintaining courteous working relationships. Other duties within the scope of licensure may be assigned.
