Full details
The role provides anesthetic care to patients of all types undergoing a range of procedures, working alongside the supervising or medically directing physician and following hospital policies. The CRNA administers anesthesia so patients feel no pain during surgery or procedures, and maintains close, continuous observation of how each patient responds to sedatives, analgesics, and anesthetic agents, promptly alerting the surgeon or anesthesiologist to any adverse change that could threaten safety.
Eligibility requires a current registered nurse license in West Virginia or the state where services will be delivered, along with certification or recertification from the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists.
Core responsibilities include safeguarding patient safety at all times and managing airways skillfully, including familiarity with adjuncts such as the Bullard laryngoscope, fiberoptic scope, and ILMA. The CRNA works within delineated clinical privileges, takes precautions against infection, protects patient confidentiality, and joins in pre-anesthetic evaluations and the choice of agents and techniques. Duties also cover placing intravenous and invasive monitoring catheters per protocol, intubation and extubation, arterial punctures for blood gas analysis, managing induction, maintenance, and emergence for general, regional, and monitored anesthesia cases, and providing immediate postoperative evaluation and care.
Additional tasks include giving IV fluids matched to the patient's history and procedure, administering blood products only after a hematocrit and consultation with the surgeon or anesthesiologist, documenting in the anesthesia record, and checking anesthesia equipment and supplies before care begins, gathering them personally when no anesthesia technician is available. The CRNA verifies consent documents and the surgical site during handoff with circulating and holding room nurses, takes part in the surgical pause, handles controlled substances under policy and state and federal rules, and in a life-threatening emergency provides anesthesia care when no anesthesiologist is present. The role also helps teach and evaluate newly hired CRNAs, student nurse anesthetists, and resident nurse anesthetists in the clinical area.
Physically, the work requires close visual detail, calm composure under high stress, dependability, and adaptability to varied conditions and colleagues. The environment involves exposure to infectious diseases and hazardous compounds and medications, strict safety protocols against needle sticks, sterilizing chemicals, radiation, and anesthetics, and possible back strain when moving patients. The position is listed as a 40-hour weekly day shift at a Bridgeport, West Virginia site of SMG Anesthesia, and the CRNA may be required to take call or work nights, weekends, or holidays.
