Full details

This part-time community practice role provides anesthetic care for patients undergoing all types of procedures, working alongside the supervising or medically directing physician under the standards of the Department of Anesthesiology and hospital policies. The CRNA administers anesthesia so patients feel no pain during surgery or procedures, and continuously watches each patient's response to sedatives, analgesics, and anesthetic agents, alerting the anesthesiologist to any condition that could threaten safety. The work takes place in a non-academic facility and calls for steady performance in a high-volume, fast-paced setting.

Core responsibilities include managing airway care and using airway adjuncts such as the Bullard, fiberoptic scope, and ILMA; taking precautions against infection; joining pre-anesthetic evaluations and choosing agents and techniques; and placing intravenous and invasive monitoring catheters, intubating and extubating, and performing arterial punctures for blood gas analysis. The CRNA oversees induction, maintenance, and emergence for general, regional, and monitored anesthesia cases, responds to abnormal reactions, orders further labs as needed, gives resuscitative care, and manages the patient in the immediate post-operative period. Fluids and blood products are given according to the patient's history and procedure, with blood products administered only after a hematocrit and consultation with the anesthesiologist.

The role also covers documenting patient status in the anesthesia record, completing safety and performance checks on equipment and supplies, and confirming consent and the correct surgical site during briefings and the surgical pause. The CRNA communicates with the whole perioperative team, provides anesthesia during a life-threatening emergency when no anesthesiologist is present, helps teach newer CRNAs, student nurse anesthetists, and medical students, and is accountable for controlled substances under department, hospital, state, and federal rules. Efficient turnover and high case volume are expected.

Minimum qualifications are a current West Virginia registered nurse license and APRN licensure as a nurse anesthetist, along with board certification or recertification by the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists. The position is scheduled for 20 hours per week with varied shifts, is classed as exempt, and is located at a Fairmont, West Virginia site for UHA University Health Associates' Anesthesiology cost center.
