The nurse anesthetist would deliver the full range of anesthesia care, including monitored anesthesia care, general anesthesia, and regional anesthesia, for surgical procedures, other medical procedures, and obstetric cases. The role involves choosing the most suitable type and method of anesthesia for a wide variety of operations at the medical treatment facility, working alongside anesthesia colleagues, surgeons, and the wider multidisciplinary team to provide high-quality, evidence-based, whole-patient care. The CRNA would also take part in departmental quality assurance and quality improvement efforts and would supervise and teach other CRNAs, students, and support staff in both clinical and administrative matters.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens and must hold a graduate or higher degree from a nurse anesthesia program accredited by one of the bodies named in the posting, with transcripts attached to the application. Graduates of foreign nursing schools must have completed the CGFNS Certification Program and provide the certificate. A current, active, unrestricted professional nursing license in the specialty, issued by a U.S. state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory, is required, along with passage of the National Council Licensure Examination. Qualifying professional experience means administering anesthetics by inhalation, regional, intravenous, local, or topical routes, monitoring anesthetized patients, and taking patient histories, and at least one full year of it is required; education cannot substitute for this experience.
Terms include a one-year probationary period, direct deposit of pay, and possible recruitment or relocation incentives for highly qualified candidates, though relocation costs are not covered. Salary includes applicable locality pay or a local market supplement, and salary negotiation may be possible for candidates new to federal service. The position may be designated as inclement weather essential and as mission essential, and male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must complete Selective Service registration certification.
