Full details

The CRNA provides anesthetic care to all types of patients and procedures, working alongside the supervising or medically directing physician and following hospital policies. The role involves administering anesthesia so patients do not feel pain during surgery or procedures, along with continuous, watchful monitoring of how each patient responds to sedatives, analgesics, and anesthetic agents. The nurse anesthetist must promptly alert the surgeon or anesthesiologist to any adverse condition that could threaten a patient's safety.

Eligibility requires a current registered nursing license in West Virginia or in whichever state the services will be delivered, plus board certification or recertification from the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists.

Core responsibilities include safeguarding patient safety at all times, skilled airway management using a range of adjuncts such as Bullard laryngoscopes, fiberoptic scopes, and ILMAs, and practicing only within delineated clinical privileges. The CRNA also takes infection-control precautions, protects patient confidentiality, joins pre-anesthetic evaluations, and chooses agents and techniques. Procedures include placing intravenous and invasive monitoring catheters per protocol, intubating and extubating, and drawing arterial blood for gas analysis.

The position manages induction, maintenance, and emergence for general, regional, and monitored anesthesia cases, recognizes and corrects abnormal responses, orders further labs when needed, and gives resuscitative care. The CRNA also handles immediate postoperative assessment, administers IV fluids tailored to history and procedure, and gives blood products after a hematocrit and consultation with the surgeon or anesthesiologist. Equipment must be checked before care begins, and the nurse verifies consent and surgical site through briefings and the surgical pause. The CRNA documents patient status, manages controlled substances according to policy and state and federal rules, and in a life-threatening emergency provides anesthesia without an anesthesiologist present. Teaching and evaluating newly hired CRNAs, student registered nurse anesthetists, and graduate registered nurse anesthetists in the clinical area is also part of the role.

Physical demands include close-range visual detail work, calm performance under high stress, reliability, adaptability to change and varied work, and cooperative working relationships with colleagues of differing backgrounds. The setting may involve contact with infectious patients and hazardous substances, strict safety protocols against needle sticks, radiation, and sterilizing chemicals, and some risk of back strain when moving patients. The role may require on-call duty, nights, weekends, or holidays.

The position is listed as a 40-hour weekly schedule, classified as exempt, at SMG Anesthesia Provider Services JMC, located at 300 S Preston St in Ranson, West Virginia, within the SMG System Medical Group, and it is part of West Virginia University Health System, which is an equal opportunity employer.
