Full details

This Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Anesthetist) position is based at Naval Medical Center San Diego, California, within the Directorate of Surgery's Anesthesiology department of the Defense Health Network Pacific Rim. The incumbent delivers the full spectrum of anesthetic care and pain management to eligible beneficiaries. The posting notes that a recruitment or retention incentive and Advanced Leave Accrual may be authorized, and that it is a direct hire solicitation.

Core duties include continuous monitoring of vital signs, fluid status and patient positioning during medical and surgical cases, as well as selecting the most suitable type and method of anesthesia across a wide range of procedures. The CRNA reviews patient information against individualized anesthetic options and current guidelines to settle on and discuss the best plan. Responsibilities also cover gathering, preparing, inspecting and confirming the sanitation and working order of equipment, and responding to emergencies with advanced life support and CPR within the scope of practice.

The role serves as an anesthesia consultant to diverse medical, surgical and nursing services, sharing current developments in the field. The nurse anesthetist helps develop and assess clinical care standards and treatment programs, and supervises and teaches other CRNAs, students and ancillary staff in both clinical and administrative matters.

Applicants must be US citizens holding a graduate or higher nursing degree in the anesthesia specialty, or a qualifying degree from a program accredited by a recognized body, plus a current unrestricted nursing license in a clinical specialty matching the position. Qualifying experience requires at least one full year of professional nursing work that involved administering general, regional, local and sedation anesthesia and adjusting agents to keep patients stable. Experience may be paid or unpaid, and education cannot substitute for experience. Other conditions include a one-year probationary period, direct deposit of pay, and an infrequent need to cover a 12-hour weekend shift.
