Anesthesia care team

Full details

This short-hour CRNA role centers on selecting and giving intravenous, spinal, and other anesthetics before and during surgical or medical procedures, working as part of the anesthesia care team under Kaiser Permanente policies. The anesthetist watches patients' reactions and vital signs during and after anesthesia, intervenes when needed, files a postoperative report on each patient's condition, and keeps accurate anesthesia records.

Responsibilities also extend beyond the operating room to procedures such as intubation and arterial line placement, carried out within established competencies and a physician's order. Pre-anesthesia work includes reviewing charts, such as consent forms, medications, lab results, and devices like hearing aids or dentures, and assessing airway risks. The CRNA documents these evaluations thoroughly, discusses tests and anesthetic risks with patients and families, and consults with anesthesiologists and surgeons.

Each patient's care plan is developed and reviewed with the supervising physician before the anesthesia is started, with drug choices guided by safety, surgical need, possible complications, and medical history. The role involves mixing drug solutions to set concentrations, handing off patients to post-anesthesia care staff in a safety-focused exchange, and responding to changes such as the need for infant resuscitation.

Kaiser Permanente reviews compensation for its positions regularly and reserves the right to revise job descriptions or switch a position between salaried and hourly pay, typically with notice to affected employees.
