The role centers on giving anesthesia to patients during surgical, obstetrical, and other procedures that cause pain, always under a physician's supervision and within a collaborative team that includes residents, fellows, attending physicians, and other staff.

Core responsibilities include assessing patients before, during, and after anesthesia, keeping patients safe while delivering anesthesia using accepted techniques, and documenting procedures and any incidents. The CRNA also serves as a point of contact for surgeons, anesthesiologists, colleagues, patients, and families, adjusts communication and privacy practices to each patient population, and takes part in department quality improvement work and professional development. Other related tasks may be assigned.
