Anesthesia care team

Full details

This role centers on delivering anesthesia as part of a care team. The nurse anesthetist chooses and gives intravenous, spinal, and other anesthetics before and during surgical or medical procedures, following the organization's policies. Throughout and after anesthesia, the nurse watches the patient's responses and vital signs, acts on problems when needed, files a postoperative report, and keeps anesthesia records.

Core duties include reviewing or carrying out pre-anesthesia assessments for surgeries, deliveries, and other procedures in the hospital, and talking through the plan with anesthesiologists and surgeons. The nurse examines charts, including permits, pre-op medications, lab results, and details such as hearing aids, dentures, contact lenses, or prostheses. The nurse also looks for possible airway difficulties, documents every assessment thoroughly, and explains tests, procedures, and major anesthetic risks to patients and families, recording that this was done.

The nurse builds each patient's care plan, reviews it with the supervising physician, and then starts IV lines, administers the chosen agent, and manages the patient. Agent selection accounts for safety, surgical needs, possible complications, and the patient's history. The nurse takes part in a safety-focused handoff with post-anesthesia care unit staff, mixes drug solutions to required concentrations, and keeps precise records of procedures and the patient's condition just before anesthesia.

Some tasks take place outside the operating room, such as intubation and arterial line placement, and are performed only within set policies, documented competencies, and a physician's order. Progress notes must describe those procedures. The nurse may also need to step in with emergency measures, such as infant resuscitation, and must keep the anesthesiologist or surgeon informed of any change in the patient.

The posting notes that the employer reviews compensation for positions regularly and may revise job descriptions or change a position between salaried and hourly status, typically after notifying affected employees.
