Full details

This Nurse Anesthetist role places a CRNA in the Department of Anesthesia & Perioperative Care at UCSF Medical Center, delivering anesthesia for surgical cases in the operating room and for diagnostic or therapeutic procedures elsewhere, always under the direction of a departmental faculty member. The final salary and offer components remain subject to further approval under University of California policy.

Core responsibilities include evaluating patients before a procedure through chart review, history, and physical examination; choosing and giving inhalational, intravenous, and regional anesthetic techniques; and watching vital signs and other parameters throughout care. The CRNA places invasive monitoring lines, decides when fluids, blood products, or adjunct medications are needed, maintains the surgical anesthetic state, and corrects unwanted changes in the patient's physiology. The role also involves keeping the surgeon and supervising anesthesiologist informed, charting the anesthetic as the law requires, and providing post-operative follow-up in the recovery room.

When not scheduled for a case, the CRNA remains available for assignments as directed by the daily anesthesia faculty physician. The work calls for collaboration with physicians, surgeons, advanced practice providers, and other clinical and administrative staff, including histories and physicals, preoperative coordination with outside providers and primary care physicians, and responding to shifting patient status. Patient and family education is part of the role, along with telephone advice and bedside communication, interpreting ordered tests and imaging, and helping develop protocols that improve clinical efficiency.

Privileges expand as competency is shown through proctoring or the Focused Professional Practice Evaluation process, and the CRNA begins with a standard procedure template set by the credentialing office. Anesthesia care is provided at every UCSF site where the service is used now or will be needed later, so the position requires orientation to and willingness to work across all Medical Center campuses. Shifts vary with operational needs and may change with required union notice.

Qualifications include graduation from an accredited nursing school, a current California registered nurse license, and a master's degree from an accredited nurse anesthesia program, plus graduation from a Council on Accreditation-accredited anesthesia school. Required credentials are an active, unrestricted California nurse anesthetist license and RN license, current national certification from the National Board of Certification and Recertification of Nurse Anesthetists, and current American Heart Association BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications. No preferred qualifications are listed.
