Full details

Houston Methodist is seeking a Nurse Anesthetist II to work under the guidance of the attending anesthesiologist and the department chair. The role covers pre-anesthesia, intraoperative and post-anesthesia care in a setting that blends clinical work, research and teaching, and it carries direct patient care responsibilities governed by Texas nursing law and the institution's standards of care and procedures. The nurse anesthetist also contributes to the teaching mission of the Department of Anesthesiology.

Core duties include conducting thorough pre-anesthesia evaluations, building anesthesia plans, administering induction, maintenance and emergence care, and choosing the drugs and fluids needed to keep patients stable. The position also places epidural catheters as anesthesia adjuncts, inserts and manages arterial, central venous and pulmonary artery lines, manages airways inside and outside the operating room, and responds to emergencies using advanced life support techniques. Documentation in the medical record, participation in quality and safety initiatives, and reporting of near misses are expected.

Beyond bedside work, the nurse anesthetist explains the anesthetic plan and post-operative expectations to patients and families, serves as a clinical resource and advocate, and coaches colleagues through complex decisions. Some assignments may include service on institutional committees, teaching in staff development and continuing education programs, and ongoing professional development. The role is designated exempt under the FLSA and may involve on-call coverage during emergencies such as disasters or severe weather. Local travel within the Houston area may be required, while travel beyond it is not.

Candidates need a bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited nursing school and completion of a nurse anesthesia program. One year of anesthesia experience is preferred, and residency experience counts toward it. Required credentials include a Texas RN license, a Texas APRN-CRNA certification and national certification through the NBCRNA, along with BLS and ACLS certification from the American Heart Association. A Texas license must be obtained within 60 days for those establishing Texas residency. Strong knowledge of cardiac, vascular and thoracic anesthesia, pharmacology and invasive monitoring is expected, along with the ability to work independently and adjust to changing schedules.

Attire for this position is business professional rather than scrubs. The opening sits within the Houston Methodist Specialty Physician Group, a nonprofit entity that supports physician practice autonomy while building academic clinical practices.
