Full details
UM Rehab & Ortho Institute, a Maryland hospital dating to 1895, is a leader in orthopedics and neurological care and is the state's largest provider of inpatient rehabilitation services. Its 141-bed facility treats patients recovering from stroke, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, and orthopedic or sports injuries.
This Master's-prepared advanced practice nurse will deliver anesthesia care alongside anesthesiologists, surgeons, physicians, and other medical staff across every practice area of the institute. The role follows the scope and practice parameters set by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists and spans pre-anesthetic evaluation, induction, maintenance and emergence, post-anesthesia care, and peri-anesthetic support.
Responsibilities include assessing patients before surgery, documenting findings, ordering tests and medications, and obtaining informed consent. The nurse builds age-appropriate, culturally sensitive anesthetic plans, selects and starts the technique (general, regional, local, or IV sedation), places monitoring, and reads hemodynamic and lab data to keep patients stable. Airway and pulmonary management, emergence and recovery, post-anesthesia discharge follow-up, pain control including labor epidurals, emergency response, and transport of critically ill patients are also part of the work, as is teaching trainees from several disciplines.
Candidates need graduation from an accredited nursing program and a Master's degree from an accredited nurse anesthesia program, a current Maryland State Board of Nurse Examiners license for nursing and nurse anesthesia, and current or recertified NBCRNA credentials. Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications are required, and three to five years of experience is preferred. The role calls for regular work in trauma or crisis settings, strong communication skills, familiarity with patient safety practices, and pediatric experience.
The position is listed at a part-time fraction of full-time and is described as having no nights, weekends, holidays, or on-call duty. The posted pay range is $70,500 to $83,100.
