Full details

The position is based at Army Medical Center Madigan in Tacoma, Washington, within the hospital's education and training division for the anesthesia nursing course. A recruitment or relocation incentive may be authorized, and advanced pay in hire may be considered for candidates new to federal service. The announcement is a direct hire solicitation, and US citizenship is required.

The anesthetist delivers every form of anesthesia across surgical cases, from routine procedures to highly intricate ones. Responsibilities include assessing patients before surgery, both physically and mentally, to shape a tailored care plan, then directing anesthetic management during the operation while watching vital signs and changing drug levels as needed. The role also covers immediate recovery care that keeps patients stable as they move to post-operative units. Additional duties involve participating in research and collecting data aimed at advancing anesthesia methods and improving patient results, plus teaching and guiding student nurse anesthetists and physician residents.

Qualifying requires a graduate or higher degree from an anesthesia nurse program accredited by a recognized body, with official transcripts attached to the application. Foreign-trained applicants need certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools. A current, active, unrestricted professional nursing license from a state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory is needed, along with passage of the National Council Licensure Examination and a current Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist credential. Current federal employees in the 0610 occupational series with continuous service since September 27, 2017 or earlier may be exempt from the degree and license basics, provided they document their status.

Candidates must have at least one full year of professional nursing experience at the GS-12 level that involved giving anesthesia for complex surgeries, assessing and tracking anesthetic care and recovery, and taking part in clinical nursing research, data gathering, or evidence-based practice protocols. Experience may be paid or unpaid, including volunteer service. Education cannot replace this experience requirement. Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must complete the Selective Service pre-employment statement.

The position carries a one-year probationary period, during which the agency reviews performance, conduct, and whether continued employment serves the public interest, and written certification is needed to continue. Direct deposit of pay is mandatory, and selection may be limited by Department of Defense referral rules for displaced employees. Several positions may be filled through this announcement. Salary includes locality pay or a local market supplement, and relocation costs for a permanent change of station are not authorized.
