Full details
This federal position sits within the Anesthesiology Service of the Department of Surgery at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington. It is a direct hire opportunity, and a recruitment or relocation incentive may be authorized, along with advanced pay for candidates new to federal service.
The nurse anesthetist would advise multidisciplinary teams on anesthesia choices, associated risks, and evidence-based approaches, and would review current literature to inform clinical decisions. Responsibilities also include taking part in quality assurance and improvement work, peer review, ongoing professional practice evaluation, and accreditation activities, along with evaluating care standards, working to improve outcomes, and keeping required certifications current. The role further involves teaching and mentoring CRNAs, students, and other staff through lectures, in-services, and bedside instruction.
Clinically, the practitioner would evaluate patients before surgery, select suitable anesthesia methods, secure informed consent, interpret diagnostic findings, and modify plans as a patient's condition changes. The work covers monitored anesthesia care, general anesthesia, and regional techniques for surgical, obstetric, and procedural cases, including monitoring patients, managing physiology during the procedure, and providing immediate postoperative care.
Eligibility is limited to US citizens. Applicants need a graduate or higher degree from an accredited nurse anesthesia program, with official transcripts attached, or, for foreign-educated applicants, certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools. A current, active, unrestricted registered nurse license and passing the National Council Licensure Examination are required, along with a current CRNA license. The position is classified at the GS-12 level and requires at least one full year of professional nursing experience administering general, regional, local, and sedation anesthesia, with experience alone accepted and no substitution of education.
Other conditions include a one-year probationary period, direct deposit of pay, and selection subject to Department of Defense referral restrictions for displaced employees. Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must complete Selective Service registration certification, and proof of citizenship is required. Several positions may be filled from this announcement, and salary includes locality pay or a local market supplement. Permanent change of station costs are not authorized.
