Full details
The role provides anesthetic care for patients undergoing all types of procedures, working alongside the supervising or medically directing physician under the standards of the Department of Anesthesiology and in line with hospital rules. The CRNA gives anesthesia so that patients feel no pain during surgery or procedures, and watches closely for how each patient reacts to sedatives, pain medications, and anesthetic agents, alerting the anesthesiologist to any condition that could endanger safety or care. The setting is a non-academic facility where the work is high in volume and moves quickly.
Candidates need a current Registered Nurse license along with APRN licensure as a Nurse Anesthetist in West Virginia. They must also hold current certification from the Council on Certification of Nurse Anesthetists, either initial or renewed.
Core responsibilities include skilled airway management with all airway adjuncts such as Bullard devices, fiberoptic scopes, and ILMAs; infection-prevention precautions; joining in pre-anesthetic assessments and choosing agents and techniques; placing IV and invasive monitoring lines, performing intubation and extubation, and drawing arterial blood for gas analysis. The CRNA manages induction, maintenance, and emergence for general, regional, and monitored cases, recognizes and treats abnormal responses, orders extra lab work when needed, provides resuscitation, and follows patients through the immediate postoperative period. Other duties include giving IV fluids and blood products (after a hematocrit and discussion with the anesthesiologist), documenting in the anesthesia record, and completing equipment safety checks and gathering supplies when no anesthesia technician is available.
The CRNA also verifies consent and surgical site through briefings with circulating and holding-room nurses, takes part in the surgical pause, and communicates with the whole perioperative team. In a life-threatening emergency, the CRNA provides anesthesia care when no anesthesiologist is present. Additional responsibilities include helping to teach and evaluate new CRNAs, student registered nurse anesthetists, and medical students, handling controlled substances under hospital, state, and federal rules, and delivering efficient anesthesia that supports fast turnover and high case volume. The position is listed as 40 scheduled hours per week on varied shifts, classified as exempt, at a facility in Fairmont, West Virginia.
