Full details
The VA Sioux Falls Health Care System is recruiting two full-time Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists to deliver anesthesia care across its medical center, and the announcement stays open on a continuous basis until May 28, 2026 so that additional vacancies can be filled from qualified applicants as they are referred. The position is on-site, not virtual, and runs a day schedule from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with call listed as part of the role.
Core duties include completing and documenting pre-anesthetic evaluations, which may involve ordering consultations and further diagnostic or lab work, and delivering planned general, regional, or monitored anesthesia care. The CRNA manages fluids, medications, ventilator support, and physiologic stability, provides pain control, and responds to anesthesia-related and surgical complications. Procedures in scope include general anesthesia induction and airway management, endotracheal intubation, peripheral nerve blocks, central neuraxial blocks, and epidural blood patches. The nurse anesthetist also serves on the Code Blue team, primarily for airway management, and provides emergency airway support across the facility under the ASA difficult airway algorithm and local protocols.
Additional responsibilities include keeping anesthesia equipment ready for use and cleaned to hospital, manufacturer, and CDC standards, following OR safety and infection control rules, presenting in-service education to the department and other services, taking part in approved research, and precepting student nurse anesthetists. The patient population spans adults and older patients, and care is tailored to age-specific needs.
The compensation and benefits package includes a competitive salary with regular raises and possible performance awards. Staff receive 50 paid days off each year, made up of 26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, and 11 paid federal holidays. Retirement includes a federal pension with five-year vesting and a federal 401(k) with agency contributions of up to 5 percent. Federal health, vision, dental, term life, and long-term care insurance are offered, and many of these can be kept into retirement.
Candidates need a master's or doctoral degree in nurse anesthesia from a COA-accredited program, completed at the time of graduation; applicants still finishing the degree may be referred and tentatively selected but cannot be hired until it is conferred. A full, unrestricted state or territorial RN-equivalent license and current NBCRNA certification or a COA-recognized equivalent are conditions of employment. Entry is at the Nurse II level with no experience required, while Nurse III requires one year of specialized CRNA experience at the II level and adds duties such as mentoring trainees and quality audits. U.S. citizenship is generally required, along with English proficiency, a pre-employment physical, a drug screen, a background check, Selective Service registration where applicable, and annual influenza vaccination. A probationary period may apply, and the position is in the Excepted Service without competitive status.
