Full details

The North Florida/South Georgia VA Healthcare System is recruiting an experienced Certified Nurse Anesthetist for its Anesthesiology Service, a role tied to the growth of a VA academic hospital program. The announcement is open continuously, with applications kept on file through the end of 2026 and candidates referred in cycles every two weeks until the positions are filled. The position carries eligibility for the Education Debt Reduction Program, a student loan repayment benefit, with award amount and eligibility period set by the VHA program office after application review; former participants cannot apply.

As a Licensed Independent Provider, the nurse anesthetist practices autonomously while coordinating with surgeons, other health professionals and support staff to deliver safe anesthesia. Core work includes pre-anesthesia evaluation and plan development, administering inhalational, regional, intravenous, local and topical anesthesia, and monitoring patient status throughout procedures. The role also covers emergency airway and resuscitation management across the facility, post-anesthetic recovery care, and clear communication with patients and teams about any changes to the plan.

The nurse anesthetist is expected to build and carry out anesthesia care plans for local, regional, general and monitored sedation, both inside and outside the operating room. Responsibilities include supporting quality improvement, serving as a resource for staff education, and acting as a preceptor or adjunct clinical faculty for trainees rotating through the facility. Other duties may be assigned as needed.

The VA total rewards package includes a competitive salary with regular increases and potential performance awards. Paid time off totals 50 days a year, made up of 26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave and 11 federal holidays. Retirement consists of a traditional federal pension with five-year vesting and a federal 401K with agency contributions of up to 5%. Federal health, vision, dental, term life and long-term care insurance are offered, and many of these can be carried into retirement.

The regular schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., though supervisors may assign various shifts on a temporary or permanent basis according to facility and patient needs. The position is on-site only, with telework and relocation incentives not available. Candidates must be U.S. citizens, hold a master's or doctoral degree in nurse anesthesia from a COA-accredited program, maintain an active full and unrestricted state license, and hold current NBCRNA certification or an equivalent COA-recognized credential. Full English proficiency is required, and the position is in the Excepted Service without competitive status. Applicants must pass a pre-employment physical that can involve lifting up to 44 pounds and standing for up to eight hours.

The position is graded at Certified Nurse Anesthetist III, with a selection range from grade II to III depending on the applicant. Entry-level candidates are expected to show sound anesthesia knowledge, safe practice habits, and the ability to manage emergency situations, while higher-grade work involves complex and technically demanding cases, mentoring trainees, and contributing to audit, quality assurance and interdisciplinary committees.
