Full details
This full-time, independent-model role involves providing anesthetic care to patients of all types undergoing every kind of procedure, working alongside the supervising or medically directing physician and following hospital policies. The CRNA administers anesthesia so patients feel no pain during surgery or procedures, and watches them continuously for reactions to sedatives, analgesics, and anesthetic agents, alerting the surgeon or anesthesiologist to any condition that could endanger patient safety.
Eligibility requires a current Registered Nurse license in West Virginia or in whatever state the services are delivered, along with certification or recertification from the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists.
Core responsibilities include keeping patients safe at all times, handling airway management with proficiency in airway adjuncts such as the Bullard scope, fiberoptic scope, and ILMA, and practicing only within delineated clinical privileges. The CRNA takes infection-prevention precautions, protects patient confidentiality, joins pre-anesthetic evaluations, and chooses agents and techniques. Tasks include placing IV and invasive monitoring catheters per protocol, intubating and extubating, drawing arterial blood for gas analysis, managing induction, maintenance, and emergence for general, regional, and monitored cases, and giving post-operative evaluation and care.
Additional duties cover IV fluid administration guided by history and procedure, blood product transfusion after a hematocrit and consultation with the surgeon or anesthesiologist, accurate anesthesia charting, and safety and performance checks on equipment and supplies, including gathering supplies when no anesthesia technician is present. The CRNA verifies consent and the surgical site during briefings with circulating and holding-room nurses, takes part in the surgical pause, and communicates across the perioperative team. In a life-threatening emergency the CRNA provides anesthesia when no anesthesiologist is available. The role also includes helping teach and evaluate newly hired CRNAs, GRNAs, and SRNAs, and being accountable for controlled substances under hospital, state, and federal rules.
Physical demands include close visual detail work, calm performance under high stress, and adaptability to varied workplace conditions. The setting may involve exposure to infectious diseases, hazardous compounds, radiation, and sharps, with strict safety protocols, possible back strain when moving patients, and expectations for on-call duty, nights, weekends, or holidays. The posting lists 40 scheduled weekly hours at SMG System Medical Group in Buckhannon, West Virginia.
