Full details
This as-needed role at a Baylor Scott & White facility is open to a licensed nurse with advanced anesthesia training, and it is offered only at select locations because of their particular workplace conditions. The anesthetist gives anesthesia and manages anesthetic levels for patients across all age groups during operations and other procedures.
Before induction, the CRNA reviews the physician's pre-anesthetic evaluation, lab results, and the patient's health history, including psychosocial and physical factors, and talks through the planned surgery with the patient. The CRNA also checks dentures, prosthetics, allergies, and fasting status, confirms safety standards are met, and inspects the machine, suction, airway equipment, monitor and electrode placement, and positioning.
During a case, the CRNA induces and maintains general anesthesia, and performs regional techniques, following the staff anesthesiologist's instructions or departmental practice. The role includes intubation and extubation, selecting and giving medications and adjunct drugs, managing fluids, blood, and electrolytes, and responding to emergencies under departmental policy. Noninvasive monitoring such as blood pressure, ECG, oximetry, temperature, and oxygen analysis is required for general anesthesia, with blood pressure and pulse recorded at least every 5 minutes and other pulses at least every 15 minutes.
Documentation is extensive: every pertinent event is logged on the anesthetic record, including tourniquet time and pressure, site changes, and surgeon-administered injections, and a pre-anesthetic machine checklist is completed for each case. After the procedure, the CRNA reverses and ends anesthesia safely, transports the patient to recovery with a detailed handoff, reports complications to the recovery and staff anesthesiologists, and writes post-anesthesia progress notes for up to 24 hours.
Key expectations include completing 40 CEUs every two years, keeping certification and registration current, staying up to date on resuscitation and anesthesia practice, working as part of an anesthesia team, handling variable hours, and sharing on-call duties with timely response. Candidates need a bachelor's degree, under one year of experience, CRNA credentials, and ACLS and BLS certification, which must be obtained within 30 days of hire or transfer.
Benefits include immediate eligibility for health and welfare coverage, a 401(k) plan with a dollar-for-dollar match up to 5%, tuition reimbursement, and paid time off that accrues from day one. Benefits may differ by position type and level, and the employer directs candidates to its benefits hub for full details.
