Full details
This full-time, ongoing position at Cook County Health's Stroger and Provident hospitals is a rotating day shift running 6:30 A.M. to 4:30 P.M., with a posted hourly salary of $103.818 to $120.355 that depends on years of experience documented at application. The Advanced Practice Nurse Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist works alongside an anesthesiologist to deliver anesthetic agents and adjuvants for a wide range of surgical and obstetrical cases. The role also includes preoperative evaluation, in which the nurse anesthetist assesses readiness, proposes a primary anesthetic plan with an alternative, reviews the risks and benefits of each with the patient and family, and secures informed consent, followed by postoperative visits to track recovery.
Core duties include managing the airway, induction, intubation and maintenance of anesthesia, supporting ventilation manually or by mechanical ventilator, and continuously monitoring vital signs and physiologic responses with invasive monitoring when needed. The nurse anesthetist keeps accurate records of drugs and fluids, supports the patient until consciousness and vital functions recover, and responds to adverse reactions by taking corrective action or requesting an anesthesiologist. Participation in morbidity and mortality conferences, grand rounds, quality assurance projects, departmental meetings and required safety training is expected, along with supervising and evaluating student nurse anesthetists from Rush University's program.
Candidates must hold an Illinois registered nurse license and an Illinois advanced practice license, along with a master's degree from an accredited nurse anesthesia program or documented eligibility to complete one shortly before starting. Illinois CRNA certification and the advanced practice license must be in place by the first day, or obtained within two weeks of starting. Progressive experience and advanced clinical knowledge are required, and current CPR, ACLS and PALS credentials are needed, or must be obtained within two weeks of starting. Preferred experience includes familiarity with all anesthetic agents, equipment and monitoring, and hands-on work across all anesthesia types, and the ability to work any shift is listed as a desirable trait.
The position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement with SEIU Local 73, and internal eligible applicants are considered before external ones. Benefits include medical, dental and vision coverage, basic term life insurance, a pension plan, a deferred compensation program, paid holidays, vacation and sick time, and eligibility for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. Offers are contingent on satisfactory references, healthcare and criminal background checks, licensure and certifications, a physical and a pre-employment drug screen, and veteran preference applies under the county's rules.
