Full details
This intermittent position at the San Francisco VA Medical Center involves providing specialized anesthesia care to Veterans for surgical and diagnostic procedures. The certified registered nurse anesthetist handles pre-anesthesia evaluations, builds individualized care plans, delivers and oversees anesthesia, monitors patients continuously, and manages pain after procedures. The role works alongside anesthesiologists, surgeons, proceduralists, nurses, and other team members to deliver safe, evidence-based, Veteran-centered care.
Responsibilities span inpatient and outpatient cases and include general, regional, local, intravenous, and monitored sedation, within the provider's approved scope and privileges. The nurse anesthetist manages induction, maintenance, emergence, and recovery, selects medications and fluids, places monitoring, and handles airway management and emergencies, including resuscitation and BLS/ACLS care when needed. Post-anesthesia duties include recovery assessment, pain and nausea management, disposition, and follow-up, along with accurate documentation and, where authorized, ordering of perioperative medications.
Candidates need a master's or doctoral degree in nurse anesthesia from a COA-accredited program, which may be completed after referral with the position held until requirements are met. A full, unrestricted state or territory license and current NBCRNA certification or an equivalent COA-recognized credential are conditions of employment. Entry is at the Nurse II level with no experience required, and Nurse III requires one year of specialized APN (CNA) experience. Salary ranges are listed as Grade 2: $194,127-$258,180 annually and Grade 3: $211,598-$281,415 annually, depending on qualifications, with regular raises and potential performance awards. The position is not telework or virtual, and relocation incentives, PCS, and EDRP are not authorized.
