Full details

The role involves administering anesthesia to patients during surgical, obstetrical, and other procedures that cause pain, working under a physician's supervision. The nurse anesthetist works within a collaborative team that includes residents, fellows, attending physicians, and other staff caring for patients.

Core responsibilities include recording procedures and any incidents, evaluating patients before, during, and after anesthesia, and keeping patient safety at the center of anesthesia delivery using accepted techniques. The position also serves as a point of contact between surgeons, anesthesiologists, colleagues, patients, and families, and calls for taking part in department quality assurance work and professional development. The nurse adjusts communication and care to each patient group, attending to privacy, introductions, explanations of procedures, and consent. Other related duties may be assigned.

Candidates need a Master's degree from a nurse anesthesia program accredited by the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, along with licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse in the state of practice, AANA certification, and Basic Cardiac Life Support certification from the American Heart Association. No prior work experience is required. Strong computer skills, clear written and verbal communication, and the ability to work a flexible schedule that may include nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call shifts are also expected.

Staff are regularly exposed to blood, body fluids, and tissue, and to hazardous medications and waste common in a healthcare environment.

The employer is Ochsner Health, and the opening is at St. Martin Hospital. Remote work is not available to residents of Colorado, California, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Vermont, Washington, or Washington, D.C. Ochsner is an equal opportunity employer.
