The CRNA administers intravenous, inhalation, and regional anesthesia to keep patients free from pain during surgery, obstetrical deliveries, and other medical or dental procedures. Anesthesia may be given to patients of every age and A.S.A. class, including older adults and children, and the role also provides airway management across the hospital as needed.

Candidates need a current RN license and NBCRNA certification, along with a master's or doctoral degree from an accredited nurse anesthesia program. Strong clinical judgment, communication, and teamwork skills are expected, as is the ability to work cooperatively with anesthesiologists and other health care providers. Required credentials also include Michigan RN licensure, state specialty certification, clinical privileges, and ALS, BLS, and PALS certifications, all kept current.
