Full details

Working under the medical direction of an anesthesiologist, the CRNA delivers general and regional anesthesia for surgical, obstetrical, and other procedures requiring anesthesia care. Patients served span every age group, from neonates and children through adolescents, adults, and older adults, with care delivered according to hospital and departmental standards. Responsibilities may include airway management, fluid and homeostasis maintenance, patient monitoring, emergency response involving airways and cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and ventilator management.

Before surgery, the CRNA interviews and examines each patient, reviews the chart, and selects an anesthetic plan together with the anesthesiologist, taking into account the patient's response to pre-medication. The role involves coordinating with surgeons and anesthesiologists about patient-specific concerns, checking and preparing equipment and medications, and administering anesthesia within the provider's delineated privileges. During the case the CRNA monitors the patient and responds to changes in condition, and within 24 hours after surgery the CRNA evaluates the patient again.

Additional duties include precepting student nurse anesthetists, keeping accurate records of controlled substances according to departmental guidelines, and maintaining equipment and supplies under department policy. The CRNA is expected to follow organizational, regulatory, and state requirements, to work in line with the organization's policies and principles, and to maintain courteous, cooperative relationships with patients, staff, and the public. Other tasks within the scope of the CRNA's license and certification may be assigned.
