Full details
The Ashley River Tower location is an adult-focused academic hospital in Charleston, South Carolina. Its surgical footprint includes ten operating rooms, plus a sizable non-OR anesthesia presence spread across seven endoscopy suites and six cardiac, vascular, and interventional imaging rooms.
Anesthesia coverage for CRNAs here centers on surgical oncology, colorectal, bariatric, and plastic cases, with an occasional vascular or thoracic procedure. The role is a PRN, hourly position with a scheduled 8 hours per week, and the site is eligible for a location stipend.
The CRNA delivers anesthesia to a broad range of adult patients, selecting and giving agents in consultation with the attending anesthesiologist under accepted practice standards. Responsibilities include preparing solutions, operating anesthesia machines and related equipment, completing pre- and post-anesthesia evaluations, keeping notes in the patient chart, reporting patient status to the physician, providing resuscitative care when needed, helping with patient transfers, and taking part in departmental teaching and continuing education.
Candidates must be graduates of a COA-accredited nurse anesthesia program and hold or be eligible for National Board certification or recertification. Those hired after March 1, 2019 need a master's degree or higher in nurse anesthesia. The applicant must be insurable by MUSC's medical malpractice carrier at the required limits, be recognized as an APRN or eligible for that status, and hold or be eligible for a South Carolina license. A current BLS certification from the American Heart Association is also required.
Practice is performed under the clinical supervision of an anesthesiologist and the administrative oversight of the CRNA manager, following the department's written policies. Expected skills include proficiency with anesthesia equipment, current anesthesia knowledge, facility safety awareness, consistent universal precautions, and the ability to work collaboratively with surgeons, residents, anesthesia staff, and nurses.
The position involves substantial physical demands, including long periods of standing, walking, and sitting, frequent work in elevated or confined spaces, lifting up to 50 pounds unassisted, and fine hand manipulation. Staff must also manage rotating shifts, possible overtime, stressful situations, and a latex-safe environment, and some roles require respirator fit qualification.
