Full details

The CRNA provides anesthetic care to patients of all types undergoing every kind of procedure, working alongside the supervising or medically directing physician and following hospital policies. The role involves numbing patients so they feel no pain during surgery or procedures, while watching closely for how each patient reacts to sedatives, pain medicines, and anesthetic agents, and alerting the surgeon or anesthesiologist to any condition that could endanger the patient.

Qualified candidates must hold a current registered nurse license in West Virginia or in whichever state the services will be delivered. They must also hold certification from the national body that certifies and recertifies nurse anesthetists.

Core responsibilities include keeping patients safe at all times, managing airways skillfully with all airway adjuncts such as the Bullard, fiberoptic scope, and ILMA, and staying within granted clinical privileges. The CRNA takes steps to limit infection risk, protects patient confidentiality, and joins in pre-anesthetic evaluations and choosing agents and techniques. Duties also cover placing intravenous and invasive monitoring catheters, intubation and extubation, arterial punctures for blood gas analysis, and managing induction, maintenance, and emergence for general, regional, and monitored cases.

The CRNA administers IV fluids based on each patient's history and procedure, and gives blood products only after checking hematocrit and consulting the surgeon or anesthesiologist. Other tasks include documenting patient status, checking equipment and supplies before care begins, verifying consent and surgical site through briefings with circulating and holding room nurses, and taking part in the surgical pause. The role also involves communicating with the care team, providing anesthesia alone in life-threatening emergencies when no anesthesiologist is present, helping teach newly hired CRNAs and students, and being accountable for controlled substances under policy and state and federal rules.

Physically, the job requires close-range visual detail work, calm performance under high stress, reliability, adaptability to change and varied work, and congenial working relationships with diverse colleagues. The environment may involve contact with infectious patients and hazardous compounds and medications, strict safety protocols against radiation, needle sticks, sterilizing chemicals, and anesthetics, and a risk of back strain when moving patients. The CRNA may be scheduled for on-call duty, nights, weekends, or holidays.

The position is based at WH Wheeling Hospital Inc. at 1 Medical Park Drive in Wheeling, West Virginia, and is listed as a 40-hour weekly schedule classified as exempt.
