Full details
The CRNA provides anesthesia care to surgical patients, including those undergoing open heart, obstetric, and radiologic procedures, and serves as a member of the Code Blue Team. Some work may take place off site, where anesthesia is given under the direct supervision of the surgeon or proceduralist.
Daily duties include completing and documenting a pre-anesthesia evaluation and interpreting the findings. Working under the direction of an anesthesiologist or proceduralist, the nurse chooses a suitable anesthetic and delivers it within the scope of granted clinical privileges and any imposed limits. The role also involves placing noninvasive and invasive monitors, watching and interpreting the data they produce during surgery, and obtaining and giving the adjunct drugs and fluids needed to run the case. Airway and breathing management, guiding the patient out of anesthesia, and post-operative assessment are included as well.
The CRNA must remain readily available in the department until each patient has left the facility or has been transferred to a nursing unit. Medical records for scheduled surgical patients must be reviewed at least two days before the operation so there is enough time to address any additional needs. The position requires meeting all hospital-wide competency standards, operating equipment and skills relevant to the practice area, and performing other assigned duties.
