Full details
The staff anesthetist will deliver anesthesia care across all patient types and procedures, working alongside the supervising or medically directing physician and following hospital policies. The role involves rendering patients insensitive to pain during surgery and procedures, watching closely for reactions to sedatives, analgesics and anesthetic agents, and alerting the surgeon or anesthesiologist to any condition that could endanger a patient.
Core responsibilities include taking part in pre-anesthetic evaluations and choosing agents and techniques, placing intravenous and invasive monitoring catheters, performing intubation and extubation, and drawing arterial blood for gas analysis. The nurse anesthetist manages induction, maintenance and emergence for general, regional and monitored cases, responds to abnormal reactions, provides resuscitative care when needed, and oversees immediate post-operative recovery. Airway management skills with adjuncts such as bullard scopes, fiberoptic scopes and ILMA devices are expected.
Additional duties cover fluid and blood product administration, thorough charting in the anesthesia record, equipment safety checks, verification of informed consent and surgical site with the care team, controlled substance accountability, and teaching of newly hired CRNAs, GRNAs and SRNAs. The nurse anesthetist must also cover emergencies when no anesthesiologist is present, always working within delineated privileges.
Candidates must hold a current registered nurse license in West Virginia or the state where services are provided, along with certification from the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists. The work calls for staying calm under high stress, dependable conduct, adaptability, and close visual detail work. The environment involves exposure to infectious agents and hazardous substances, and some on-call, night, weekend or holiday coverage may be required.
The position is listed as 40 scheduled hours per week at WMCH Weirton Medical Center in Weirton, West Virginia, within its nursing anesthesia program.
