Full details
The University Hospital operating area serves as the central receiving unit of a level-one academic trauma center. It includes 21 operating room suites covering all surgical specialties, such as trauma, transplant, orthopedics, neurosurgery, ENT, GU-GYN, robotics and burns, along with an interventional radiology suite. Anesthesia coverage also extends to non-operating room locations including CT, MRI, bronchoscopy, neuro-angiography and interventional radiology. The practice group has about 42 CRNAs. Most work three shifts of 13.5 hours per week, with some 24-hour shift staff covering most nights and a limited number of 10-hour shifts. Scheduling is self-directed, and weekend, holiday and night coverage is filled on a volunteer basis.
The role involves providing anesthesia care to patients ranging from premature neonates to elderly adults. The CRNA selects and administers anesthetics in consultation with the attending anesthesiologist, following accepted practice standards, and provides resuscitative care when needed. Duties include preparing prescribed solutions, keeping the physician informed of the patient's condition during anesthesia, completing pre- and post-anesthesia patient visits, documenting anesthesia notes, operating anesthesia machines and related equipment, helping transport patients, and taking part in departmental teaching and continuing education. CRNAs work under the clinical supervision of an anesthesiologist and the administrative supervision of the CRNA manager.
Candidates must be graduates of a Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Education Programs approved program and hold, or be eligible for, certification or recertification from the National Board on Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists. Those hired after March 1, 2019 need a master's degree or higher with a concentration in nurse anesthesia. The position also requires insurability by the medical malpractice insurer for the stated limits, current Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association, and recognition as an APRN or eligibility for one, with a current or obtainable license to practice in South Carolina. Applicants should show current clinical competency, proficiency with anesthesia equipment, and knowledge of facility safety and universal precautions, and should be able to work well with surgeons, residents, anesthesia staff and nurses.
The job is hourly, classed as a regular employee position with a scheduled 40 weekly hours and pay grade Health-37. A sign-on bonus of $50,0000 is noted as available. The posting lists physical demands including extended periods of standing, sitting and walking, frequent work in elevated or confined spaces, lifting up to 50 pounds unassisted at an infrequent rate, and the ability to work rotating shifts and overtime as needed. Vision, hearing, tactile and olfactory requirements apply, along with the ability to work in a latex-safe environment and to be fit for respirator use where selected.
